Piece vs. Peace
This is the question I had on Friday afternoon. I wanted to use the term “speak my piece” correctly and didn’t know which way to use it (is it speak my piece, or is it speak my peace???). I did a quick search on “grammar girl” and to my complete disbelief was unable to find anything to guide me. Searches on the web just turned up a whole bunch of confusion.
So a quick phone call to my mother only to find she was just as baffled as I. I made another phone call to my aunt and we came up with the logical explanation it must be “speak my PIECE” and “forever hold my PEACE” … not being 100% sure she made a quick call to a friend of hers and confirmed it to be true. SUCCESS!!
See, if you look up the word piece in the dictionary it comes up as an opinion or view; think of “I’m going to give him a piece of my mind”.
And that means, I will speak my piece but never hold my peace. I think that’s right? As for what I was speaking my piece on … that is a WHOLE different story.
